(MT. VERNON, IL) — The child sex assault case against a 38-year-old Belle Rive man in Jefferson County court has been continued until May, after two physicians were appointed Friday to evaluate the defendant as a possibly Sexually Dangerous Person. Rudy Byler was already on probation for three counts Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse when he was arrested in April 2016 on three counts Class X counts predatory criminal sexual assault of a victim under the age of 13; two counts Class 1 felony criminal sexual assault of a family member under the age of 18; and two counts Class 2 felony aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a family member — one under the age of 18 and one under the age of 13. The Illinois Attorney General’s Office became involved in Byler’s case late last year and has filed a petition to have Byler committed as a sexually dangerous person. On Friday the court appointed doctors David Suire and Steven Gaskell to evaluate Byler and determine if he is a sexually dangerous person. A status on their findings is scheduled for May 12. Byler has remained in the Jefferson County jail since his April 2016 arrest, with bail set at $500,000.
