(MT. VERNON, IL) — The Wednesday sentencing hearing for a 27-year-old Chicago man convicted in Jefferson County of murder and arson has been continued until November 29, as the defense seeks additional records of the defendant’s mental health and education. Steven Murphy was convicted in September of first-degree murder, aggravated arson, and residential arson in connection with the June 28, 2015, murder of Tamara Malin at her Harrison Street home, and the subsequent arson of that home. Murphy’s attorneys sought the continuance, saying the pre-sentencing investigation report is incomplete and that their client’s full mental health and educational records are necessary before Murphy is sentenced. He is facing between 26 and 90 years in prison. After granting the continuance, Judge Jerry Crisel noted in court Wednesday that it is extremely important to complete Murphy’s sentencing before Sean Featherstun is sworn in as Jefferson County’s new state’s attorney. As public defender, Featherstun had previously represented Murphy, which would create a conflict of interest for him to serve as a prosecutor on the case and would require the county to bring in a special prosecutor resulting in further delay to the case.
