(BENTON, IL) — The city of Benton is moving closer to occupying its new City Hall located at 1403 South Main. The Benton City Council Monday night voted unanimously to make the final payment on the former Benton Grade School administration building using unrestricted funds. The city bought the building from the school district for $500,000. City Hall and the water department will start moving to the new location on Aug. 19. The first day of business at the new facility will be on Aug. 22. There will be no drive-up window for residents to make their payments at the new facility. The current drive-up window will close Aug. 1. Payments will be accepted in the drop box inside the current City Hall, State Bank of Whittington, US Bank, Mid-Country Bank and People’s National Bank. A decision regarding flag pole placement at the new City Hall was also announced at the meeting. Plans called for two flag poles to be installed originally, but a third one will be installed so a Prisoner of War flag can be flown.
