BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) — First-term Belleville Alderwoman Janet Schmidt has died at 56. Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert said Tuesday that Schmidt died Monday night at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital after calling in sick to a special City Council meeting. A cause of death has not been publicly released. Schmidt was elected to office in April 2013. Eckert said his colleague “jumped right in” to city business. Survivors include her husband, two adult sons, a daughter and granddaughter. The mayor said he doesn’t yet know whom he will recommend the council appoint as Schmidt’s replacement to complete the remainder of a four-year term that expires in 2017. A visitation is planned for Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at George Renner and Sons Funeral Home in Belleville, with a memorial service to immediately follow.
