MOUNT VERNON — Billy R. Johnston, 89, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 1:00 pm June 18, 2024 at Green Tree Assisted Living in Mount Vernon. He was born July 23, 1934 in Mount Vernon, Illinois to the late James Warner and Helen (Fisher) Johnston. Billy married Janet (Grissom) Johnston on November 25, 1952. They were blessed with nearly sixty-seven years of marriage before she preceded him in death on October 21, 2019.

Billy is survived by his sons, Michael Johnston and wife, Cindy of Mount Vernon, Illinois and Scott Johnston and special friend, Carla of Mount Vernon, Illinois; grandchildren, Kaitlin Church and husband, Cody of Carterville, Illinois, Matt Johnston of Dahlgren, Illinois, Mallory Johnston and Kim Tate of Mount Vernon, Illinois; great-grandchildren, Anson Johnston of Carterville, Illinois, Riley Faye Johnston of Dahlgren, Illinois; and Rance Church of Carterville, Illinois; brother, Larry Johnston and wife, Laura of Mount Vernon; sister, Linda Geary and husband, Bob of Henderson, Kentucky; and close friend, Robert Cozart of Mount Vernon, Illinois.

In addition to his parents and wife, Billy was preceded in death by his brother, Gene Johnston.

Billy worked as a farm equipment salesman since the late 60’s. He recently moved to Green Tree Assisted Living and really enjoyed living there. He was a member of Mount Vernon First United Methodist Church.

A Graveside Service will be held Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at 10:00 am at Oakwood Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Illinois with Reverend Victor Long officiating. Inurnment will follow. Memorials may be made in Billy’s honor to First United Methodist Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois.
