(BENTON, IL) — A semi was involved in an accident early this morning in Franklin County. Franklin County Emergency Management says the accident happened on southbound I-57 at the Petroff Road overpass in Benton. After the crash, some oil and other materials the semi was hauling caught fire. Firefighters and emergency responders arrived shortly thereafter. After the fire was put out, officials started containing what remained of the materials. Southbound lanes of I-57 at Petroff Road were closed and drivers were told to take other routes as several gallons of oil spilled onto the roadway. One lane of southbound I-57 reopened around 8 to let some traffic through. No word at this time as to what caused the accident or if any injuries were reported.
